Even though the 49ers head into their week nine bye with a win over the Cowboys, they still welcome the break after a tumultuous first half of the season. The red and gold limp, quite literally, into the break at 4-4. A 4-4 that is a lot less palatable than a .500 mark other clubs hold at this juncture.
The absurdly long injury list is slowly shrinking. A constant stream of bad news on that front is slowly shifting. That positive shift was emphasized by John Lynch on Wednesday morning when he joined the morning show for his weekly spot. The 49ers GM was asked about the imminent return of superstar running back Christian McCaffrey, to which he offered the latest of a steady flow of good McCaffrey news over the last week and change.
“The ideal scenario is that he continues to ramp up. Just increase the volume of work,” Lynch said to Murph and Rod Brooks. “He’s been doing that and he hasn’t had any setbacks… If so then Monday he’s practicing with our team.”
Lynch was also asked about his trade dealine approach. Historically, he’s been aggressive at the deadline, annually making moves to bolster the 49ers as a Super Bowl contender. Lynch acknowledged that if the right deal presented itself that he would of course make it, but also emphasized that players like McCaffrey and linebacker Dre Greenlaw re-joining the team will provide a spark similar to that of the deadline addition of an impact player from another team.
Although the deadline is still six days away, aspiring contenders have been active in acquiring talent for what seems like pennies on the dollar before October has even closed. There are plenty of position groups on the 49ers roster that could use bolstering before November 5, whether it’s from in-house on the IR or from a team that’s already looking past 2024.
