Turns out Bono has glaucoma, a condition that makes his eyes very sensitive to light.
He once told Rolling Stone “If somebody takes my photograph, I will see the flash for the rest of the day. My right eye swells up.”
He says the glasses are “part vanity, part privacy, and part sensitivity”.
