Joe Staley was just as upset by the 49ers’ first half as you were

The 49ers are getting smacked by the Miami Dolphins. Not since 2018 has San Francisco struggled like this, and this moment, trailing 30-7 to a team with Ryan Fitzpatrick at quarterback after an NFC Championship-winning season, feels much more embarrassing than anything in that 2018 season.

Jimmy Garoppolo is back. So is Deebo Samuel. The offensive line is missing Weston Richburg, but it’s well-accustomed to that by now. This offense has its players. It’s just fundamentally incapable of performing right now.

To end the half, when the 49ers were trailing 24-7 and still seemed like they could maybe get a score to head into the locker room with, Jimmy Garoppolo looked like Nick Mullens did last week.

He was throwing pop flies to the Miami Dolphins, who were all too happy to pluck them from the sky and give their offense a pair of field goals to extend their lead. Garoppolo finished the half 7-for-17 with 77 yards and two interceptions.

On the other side of the field, cornerback Brian Allen was torched and eventually replaced by Ahkello Witherspoon, which begs the question as to why Witherspoon didn’t start in the first place.

Allen allowed the following:

139 receiving yards
31 penalty yards

2 touchdowns

Legendary tackle Joe Staley was, well, displeased, and made his feelings abundantly clear.
