For many, Labor Day weekend signals the end of the summer. For those of us in California, we get to continue to enjoy the outdoors all year long. But for me, the three-day weekend was also my last chance to hit the open road on two-wheels before the official beginning of the San Francisco 49ers regular season.
I spent the weekend riding the Sonora Pass and also exploring Yosemite. My trip began along SR-4 through Antioch and Stockton until my first fuel stop and lunch in Sonora. Then over the Sonora Pass to the quaint fishing town of Bridgeport, CA where I had dinner, drinks and stayed at the Walker River Lodge. Early on Sunday morning I rode south on Route-395 past Mono City, Lee Vining and on SR-120 to Yosemite and into the valley.
While my Harley-Davidson Softail Fatboy wasn’t built for the purpose of touring, its removable windshield and saddle bags work fine for me on such adventures. I have some basic rules for these trips… no chain restaurants or large hotels. The local businesses and people are part of the charm of these trips. Because it’s not about the destination but the journey along the way.
