At long last, we now know that the 49ers roster will be full strength in terms of its vital late summer holdouts. Trent Williams and Brandon Aiyuk are in Santa Clara and on the field, and they’re both a lot richer from the process. Everyone seems happy, and thus the collective focus has been shifted to the 49ers’ week one matchup on Monday night against the Jets.
The cupboard is stacked with established talent, but the Nienrs will need to flex their depth in order to win that elusive sixth Super Bowl title. While the team may have downgraded in certain areas, SF is widely improved across the board, and now solidified ahead of time for battle.
Larry Krueger joined Papa and Lund to talk schedule, new contracts, Ricky Pearsall, and to dissect the roster, and more. Check out the full interview here:
Krueger also touched on the value of new defensive end Leonard Floyd. A free agent signing from Buffalo, Floyd will line up opposite Nick Bosa. Krueger joked that when he told Floyd he may run into some sacks given offensive linemen’s extra care with Bosa, Floyd responded “He’s going to run into some as well.”
At linebacker, the biggest question mark remains filling a Dre Greenlaw sized hole next to Fred Warner until Greenlaw is able to return from his infamous achilles injury suffered in the Super Bowl. Free agent signing De’vondre Campbell will see most of that love to start the season. When Greenlaw is able to return, expect a small window of adjustment before the elite tandem is back to the peak of its powers.
The backup quarterback battle was one that moved the needle throughout training camp. It was a dead heat between established backup Brandon Allen, and flashy journeyman Josh Dobbs. Ultimately, Shanahan chose one o his prototypical backups in Allen.
Krueger’s Niners Nightly will air Monday through Friday from 6-7pm always on the KNBR Youtube channel. If there is no Giants game, the show will also be aired normally on KNBR 680 AM and 104.5 FM.
