Steve Young assesses whether Brock Purdy offers enough for 49ers’ Super Bowl aspirations

Brock Purdy has been a revelation for the 49ers. Since taking the reins from Jimmy Garoppolo, Purdy has yet to lose a game.

While he was drafted last due to size and arm talent, he’s been stellar for the 49ers. On Sunday, though, he did have a three overthrows of Brandon Aiyuk, Deebo Samuel and Jauan Jennings. He mostly made up for those mistakes, and was especially clutch on a couple key touchdown drives, including one at the final second of the first half.

But if that’s the median play for Purdy, featuring those misses, is it enough?

Steve Young joined Tolbert and Copes on Wednesday to assess the young quarterback.

He acknowledged Purdy is never going to have the arm talent of some of the league’s elite throwers, but still thinks he has enough to give the 49ers a chance at a Super Bowl:

We got to let Brock cook. Because I told you the guardrails last week were tighter than most people. In other words, I’m not going to give you a terrible game, but I’m probably not gonna be the guy that’s going to wing it around and throw it 80 yards and put it behind my back like Patrick Mahomes. I’m gonna give you really solid quarterbacking. And so this is within that guardrail.

And then you ask yourself, with the way Brock played this last weekend, if that was the mean, if that was the average, that you were going to get out of him forever — I’m not saying it is, but if it was — is that okay? Is that enough? And I think with this team, you’d say yes, it’s proven last week, it proved to be true. There might be a few games when it’s not and we’re gonna need more. And I’m not saying he can’t do that.

Young expanded, saying that he’s “happy with how he’s cooking,” and that his maturity is impressive.

The ability of Purdy to deal with the expectations of this team is unique, Young said”

Think about walking into that huddle when everybody in the team has been around a little while is saying, ‘We’re going to the Super Bowl and you take us.”

And he says, ‘Okay, I will.’

I mean, that’s a heck of a thing.

Young went on to preview the 49ers’ matchup with the Giants. He broke down how Daniel Jones could be an intriguing test for San Francisco against a dual-threat quarterback, even though Jones has some limitations and is prone to errors.
