Jimmy Garoppolo is still a San Francisco 49er, but he was almost a member of the Los Angeles Rams.
That’s the latest from ESPN’s Adam Schefter, who reported on Sunday morning that the Rams and Garoppolo had the “makings of a deal” if SF had released Garoppolo as expected. The 49ers were apparently not aware that such a deal was on the table, until after they re-signed Garoppolo.
“It was going to be such a Rams move to make,” a member of the 49ers organization told ESPN. “Sean McVay and Kevin Demoff would have been basking in it.”
The Rams were looking for a top-tier back up for Matthew Stafford, who has dealt with elbow issues for the past two seasons.
Interestingly, another NFC West rival, the Seattle Seahawks, were reportedly interested in signing Garoppolo, and were the destination the 49ers assumed the QB would be headed.
