As the final roster cuts inch nearer, the 49ers are doing their due diligence.

After ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported the team brought in former Panthers guard John Miller for a visit, the team worked out former Patriots tight end Dalton Keene.

Keene was a former third-round pick by the Patriots in the 2020 Draft out of Virginia Tech. He has positional flexibility as both a tight end and a fullback, but didn’t pan out in New England, catching just three passes for 16 yards.

In the 2021 offseason, New England signed big-name free agent tight ends in both Hunter Henry and Jonnu Smith.

The 49ers showed interest in the Virginia Tech product throughout the draft process, according to The Athletic’s Matt Barrows.

The 49ers’ current rostered tight ends are George Kittle, Charlie Woerner, Ross Dwelley, Tyler Kroft and Troy Fumagalli. The first three are expected to make the roster. Keene could be a potential fourth addition or practice squad pickup after roster cuts.
