After the conclusion of the 49ers’ nailbiting, 26-21 win over the Seattle Seahawks in Seattle, Jimmy Garoppolo tossed a ball into the crowd, discernibly towards 49ers fans (it was recovered, at least, by 49ers fans). According to Matt Maiocco of NBC Sports, that cost Garoppolo the sum of $7,017.
The NFL fined Garoppolo the amount according to a predetermined schedule of fines as listed on the NFL’s official website. According to Maiocco, the league views throwing a ball into the stands as a fan safety issue.
Garoppolo, despite making $19.85 million this season (per Over The Cap) after signing a then record-breaking, five-year $137.5 million contract, is actually the lowest-paid remaining quarterback in the NFC, with Russell Wilson ($26.3 million), Kirk Cousins ($29.0 million) and Aaron Rodgers ($29.3 million) all making more than him. Cousins’ number is obviously the most absurd, but all four numbers appear even more ridiculous when compared with the mostly rookie-scale deals of the remaining AFC quarterbacks.
Lamar Jackson ($2.2 million), Deshaun Watson ($3.8 million) and Patrick Mahomes ($4.5 million) will all be in line for massive, likely record-breaking extensions as the next great class of quarterbacks, with Ryan Tannehill ($2.2 million) the clear outlier, having taken over for Marcus Mariota after starting the season as the Tennessee Titans’ backups.
